SUMMARY:Sagebrush Planting Day- Weiser Knoll Fire
DESCRIPTION:As you are likely aware\, the Weiser Knoll fire burned nearly 16\,000 acres of sagebrush habitat south of Lander in mid-August of this year. Much of this area was high-quality wildlife habitat consisting of mature stands of sagebrush and bitterbrush\, and two sage-grouse leks. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)\, Wyoming Game and Fish Department\, and other partners have been hard at work on efforts to restore this area and return it to a functioning sagebrush ecosystem. As part of the restoration\, the BLM has acquired 7000 surplus sagebrush seedlings that will be strategically planted in the area of the burned leks. The Nature Conservancy is partnering with the BLM to plan a volunteer sagebrush planting day with local nonprofits and friends to support these restoration efforts\, and we need your help!\n\nWe hope you will join us on Friday\, October 23rd from 9am-2pm to put as many of these seedlings in the ground as possible. Please share this invitation with your colleagues\, students\, or volunteers as well. We will meet at 9am at Dillon Park (290 Leedy Dr) in Lander to carpool out to the site where we’ll meet Emma Freeland of the BLM. We will return there by 2pm. If you are able to join\, please RSVP to Emma (efreeland@blm.gov) by Tuesday\, October 20th at 4pm so we can plan accordingly. We will cap the number of volunteers at 30\, so please do RSVP by the deadline. Come prepared for a day outside in variable weather conditions. Sturdy boots and gloves are required as we will be digging holes and planting the seedlings into those holes. If you are physically unable to dig\, we would still love your help planting. Plan to bring your own lunch and water. For those who can join\, I will provide further information closer to the planting day. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
